.KEY MESSAGES...

on Thursday. Warming begins again by Friday and will be back to

3. There is a chance for showers and a slight chance for
thunderstorms across the Sierra Nevada today.

.DISCUSSION...
An upper low is spinning just to the west of the channel islands
with a a positively tilted ridge over the eastern Pacific. The
low is brining some mid level moisture into Central California.
Mid level cloud decks are noted across the region early this
morning and scattered mid level clouds over the desert. The
primary concern today is the Mojave Slope wind with an advisory
posted for wind gusts. Gusts this morning are in the 30 and 40
mph ranges with the peak of the wind expected later on today.
The probability of exceeding 60 mph is less than 10 percent for
the Slopes. Thunderstorms are possible with a minimal threat
along the Sierra Crests this afternoon with some CAPE present
and fairly unstable mid level lapse rates. Temperatures expected
around the seasonal normals. Progressing into Friday the upper
low is eaten up by a digging trough into the Great Basin leaving
Central California in a northerly flow aloft. This ushers in a
long dry period for the region as the threat of showers
decreases rapidly in the morning. The Mojave Slopes wind slowly
diminishes below advisory level in the early morning hours.
Otherwise, temperatures remain right around normal for the area.
The rest of the weekend features the Great Basin upper trough
exiting off into the plains and a short wave moving into the
PacNW coast late on Sunday. Weak west to northwest flow aloft
exists for the forecast area. This will allow temperatures to
sneak above normals into the 80s for the San Joaquin Valley.
The following work week features mainly weak westerly flow
allowing temperatures to remain in the 80s through the weekly
slightly up and down with weaknesses moving through the flow.
The pattern brings a very low impact weather period for the
region.
